Alexandra Mattinson
Experienced English teacher- Primary School English age to adult learners, specialising in Scottish qualifications.
I’m a writer and very experienced teacher of English and Media Studies with an excellent pass rate.
I’ve taught full time in schools on the west coast of Scotland since I qualified 15 years ago
I’ve also: marked for the Scottish Qualifications Authority at both Higher and National Five level (in English and Media) and worked as Head of Department. The majority of my students are sitting National 5 or Higher English or Media Studies.
My recent book , published by Brightred Publishing, is the only National 5 media studies guide in Scotland.
I’m friendly and approachable and, as a mum myself, am completely aware of the pressures young students are facing and the potential impact on both family and student!
I hope that I can help alleviate some of that pressure and look forward to joining you on your journey to success.
My approachable and supportive teaching style, coupled with my robust and structured lessons will allow the best possible chance of getting to grips with course work, tapping into full potential and preparing for exams.
I teach online using zoom and share all work in advance of the lesson – it is all very simple I promise!
The only requirement would be a laptop/ computer and Wi-Fi connection – I always offer a ‘test lesson’ first where you can meet me and have a practice online.
The lessons can be recorded and sent to the student after the session so that they can re- visit as many times as necessary.
I have many excellent resources which I share with my pupils. My lessons are engaging and available both in a group or one to one format.
I do expect students to be committed and work hard between sessions in order to improve their grades. I can be emailed between lessons if pupils need any further clarification.
Mock Prelims and full parental reports including working grades and estimates can be arranged for an additional fee.
I have experience of working with dyslexic students and enjoy showing them how to succeed in English or Media Studies.
I believe that everyone can improve with the right attitude and work ethic. Each lesson is structured just as it would be in school within the 5 steps for success listed below.
- Identification and targeting of key areas of difficulty.
- Improving understanding – through introduction of key skills in lesson.
- Practising – by the application of skills in the context of the course work.
- Repetition – through continued further practice – homework and feedback on progress.
- Continued assessment to test for understanding and the re-addressing of any further problematic areas.
- Watch here to see how we can best work together:
“Alex was very supportive during both of our daughter’s senior years. She was able to work out their strengths and areas requiring work very quickly and managed to keep them both motivated. Both Emily and Louise are both settled into University now. Thank you for you hard word Alex – would recommended online tuition with Alex without hesitation”.
“Our son struggled with a lack of motivation. He has dyslexia and had all but given up on his dream of gaining a pace at university – English was is stumbling block . Alex is a very experienced English teacher and was very patient and showed him how to work around his difficulties. Slowly his confidence grew – he got an A at Higher English – he had been estimated to fail and advised to drop the subject. He is now at University and continues to check in online with Alex for support through his first year. We are delighted to recommend Alex as a tutor”.
“Iona and Eilidh both loved Alex . She has instilled a love of literature in the girls who have gone from not reading at all to devouring novel after novel and Eilidh has been writing in her spare time! Iona struggled with basic literacy until she was tutored by Alex – her teacher has noticed a huge improvement. We are confident that both girls will now cope well with the senior stage of their education. We will be using her services as they progress. We are delighted to recommend her online tutoring services”.
