I have a BA (Hons), BArch (Hons) in Architecture and a PGCE degree.
Andrea Howlett
I teach Maths and Literacy for children at primary school level.

I am Andrea Howlett and have taught for 20 years in private and state schools from nursery to Year 6. I started online teaching in Summer 2020 helping children in aspects they find challenging. Online teaching is great as it is flexible and reaches people beyond the immediate community.

I use Zoom with a whiteboard and PowerPoint or other documents which works incredibly well to teach. If I have to show something with manipulatives for example counters to demonstrate a concept such as early adding, subtracting, division etc. then I switch cameras to focus on my ‘work area’ and demonstrate how this works by showing how I move the objects around to do that number operation. It is the same strategy I would be using as if I was sitting right beside your child.
At the start I would I assess your child’s strengths and misconceptions so I have a clear idea what to work on and which areas to target specifically to make teaching and learning successful. I am aware, especially with younger children aged 5 that an hour can be long, so I make sure that this is broken up into smaller learning segments with short breaks in between to do something fun like brain gym so that the entire lesson is as productive as it can be. I have used these methods recently to effectively teach the following:
- reading – using phonics and a systematic approach, building on what is knownspellings – looking at spelling patterns of graphemes
- number skills – different ways of working out problems so your child understands and has a choice of what method to use to solve problems and knows why this works
- using helpful strategies with their learning
- (I have also helped 2 students with extra tuition in German and they had fantastic results in their GCSEs – this was in face-to-face tutoring but can be easily adapted to learning online)
During the first lockdown, my 5 year old (year one) daughter really missed school, especially having that teacher figure, that as a parent just doesn’t work. She is an enthusiastic learner and loves to please but home-school just isn’t for her, or me! I was put in contact with Andrea to help me understand if my daughter had any gaps in her learning, given the significant loss of time in the classroom. My daughter clicked immediately with Andrea, even though it was ‘virtually’ via Zoom, Andrea spent quality time getting to know her and identifying where she could benefit from extra support. I would highly recommend Andrea as a tutor who can help your children with their learning in a positive and supportive way. She is caring and my daughter was thoroughly engaged with each session she had with her.
I wouldn’t hesitate to use Andrea again when we require a more permanent tutor or for a short period to cover loss of classroom schooling or when a need arises.
Andrea has been a godsend these last few months. She has boosted my daughter’s confidence and helped elevate her competence in Maths. Andrea has achieved this through her friendly, professional and creative manner with my daughter. We all look forward to our weekly sessions with Andrea.
She’s fun and I’m not scared to ask her anything.
