Ilse Roets
GCSE and IGCSE Mathematics for the following exam boards, AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, preparing pupils for 11+ and 13+ exams.
I majored in Mathematics and Geography (BSc) in South Africa and continued to complete a Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) at the then Port Elizabeth University, which allowed me to teach Maths and Geography in both English and Afrikaans medium schools. In 2001, I moved over to the UK, where I gained my Qualified Teacher Status through Sussex University and taught at a very large comprehensive school in Surrey to start with. After 10 years, I became head of maths at a school specialising in provision for Dyslexic students. I went on to complete a M.Ed in Leadership and Management, through Canterbury Christ Church University. It was during the research phase that I became aware of my own learning difficulties and subsequently confirmed dyslexia diagnosis. Despite all of these, I have always had a ‘can do’ attitude and have convinced many students over the past 20+ years of teaching and tutoring that life is better with a ‘can do’ attitude.
I have been passionate about helping students of all ages to reach their maths potential. Through a calm, patient and very encouraging attitude, I work with my students to allow them to improve.
My specialism is to build confidence and provide individuals, especially those who struggle with deciphering the questions, to become fluent in answering multi-step problem-solving questions.
I tutor in a friendly relaxing way, exploring different techniques with my student to make the learning process most effective. I come from a background of struggling with maths and have since learned that I am dyslexic, which has had an impact on how I process my work. It also meant that I had to work that little bit harder than my peers, however, it has not kept me from becoming a very patient maths teacher and tutor.
- I use manipulatives and practical items to demonstrate concepts
- Lessons are paced at my student’s speed – regardless of ability
- Regular reviews of previously covered topics
- Promote independent learning
- Confidence building for all ages (yes even for parents)
“My daughter Isabelle was struggling at school with maths due to poor maths teaching and was really lacking confidence as far as maths was concerned. Isabelle is dyslexic and Ilse, as a fellow dyslexic, really understood the areas that Isabelle would struggle with and was able to give the appropriate support. Isabelle’s online sessions with Ilse were so helpful to her and really increased her understanding and confidence. Ilse suggested doing the IGCSE maths exam by Edexcel in January before she was due to sit her GCSE exams in May/June. Isabelle got a 6 and was delighted. We were both so pleased that we found Ilse to tutor Isabelle.”
“Ilse is an amazing tutor, she is so kind and has helped me so much. She helped me gain my confidence and made me enjoy maths again, which I never thought I would say. Ilse’s online sessions were fun, helpful lessons and not much different to in-person. I was working at a 3 and Ilse helped me get a 6 which I never thought I would get. She helped me improve so much I can’t thank her enough, I am so grateful. Ilse would explain things as many times till I understood, she was so patient and understanding with me which helped me so much.”
“After being away from education for 25 years, I decided to go to University. In order to do that I had to re-take my GCSE’s, one of them being Maths. I was teaching myself at the time and needed to achieve a grade C or above, I took an exam in November which resulted in a grade E. Ilse worked with me every week from January to April and then twice a week from April till June as my sole tutor to help get my grade up to a C. Ilse was on call whenever I had a maths problem that I didn’t understand and had amazing patience with me whilst I was getting my head around equations and algebra. In that six months, Ilse was absolutely fantastic and when I re-took maths GCSE in June, I got a grade C and I would not have achieved this without her!”
“Ilse is an inspirational teacher. She is passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic about her subject. She has a positive fun attitude to learning. Ilse has a wonderful rapport with her students. She brings the subject to life and makes it relevant to everyday life. Ilse’s tutoring sessions, both face-to-face and online, have helped my daughter and her support has been invaluable. I would highly recommend Ilse (Miss Roets) as a maths tutor; your child will be in good hands.” (KPB, parent)
“Using Ilse’s tutoring methods has increased my confidence in myself with my capabilities of maths. Her tutoring is fun and creative with using different strategies, I have noticed a massive improvement with her help. Her teaching methods are dyslexia friendly; she always thinks out of the box and her ideas always work. She taught me so much!” (Layla, Year 11 student)
